IEC recommends MCG's multiple path, back-up protection approach.

Because real surge protection MUST include this feature.

A surge protector may sacrifice itself while protecting downstream equipment.  That is OK.  But then the downstream equipment is left without protection against subsequent lightning strikes.

Everyone involved with surge protection knows this is one of the most serious problems that must be considered.  Yet only MCG has designed surge protectors to solve it.

The following diagrams are taken out of IEC 60364-5-53 Amendment 1.

Here is a typical design for most surge protectors (as taken from IEC 60364-5-53 Amendment 1.)

There is only one protection path per phase.  If it fails, downstream equipment is left unprotected.

With more than one protection path per phase, if one fails, downstream equipment is still protected from subsequent lightning strikes.

Would you ride an elevator without a backup braking system or drive a car without an emergency brake?

For the same reasons you should insist on Surge Protectors with individually-fused backup protection paths on each phase.
